A note on OCLC

As is now the norm, OCLC counts are tentative, at best, as we recognize that searches using different qualifiers will often turn up different results. Searches are now further complicated by the vast numbers of digital, microfilm, and even print-on-demand copies, which have polluted the database considerably, making it difficult, without numerous phone calls or emails, to determine the actual number of tangible copies. Hence, even though the counts herein have been recently checked, most all should be taken as a measure of approximation.

$175 - Add to Cart

'Others will see the pits and tell me where they are.' Allow this book to be a lantern. / Stephen Pickering."

The author's investigations into Kabbalah in relation to Bob Dylan's poetry and music. Pickering is described as "a religious Jew" and he directs this book "toward all who - in time of pain, in time of joy - have asked questions and, in the asking, have formulated new, experiential questions." Pickering "is convinced that Dylan is operating out of a Hassidic tradition in which hope is garnered and nourished out of the perception of certain paradoxes."

$2,500 - Add to Cart

Complete file [up to Covid] of perhaps the most durable and comprehensive of the Dylan' fanzines. Nos. 1-17 (in 6 volumes) are reprints (see below), the balance are originals; original pictorial wrappers, illustrated in black & white and color throughout. The early numbers (up to about no. 60) are printed from typescript, and the edition sizes are limited anywhere from 300 to 2300 copies. Thereafter edition sizes are not given and the magazine assumes a more formal look typographically.

In issue #200 (December 2018), Derek Barker writes: "The first 17 issues were little more than newsletters that I sent free of charge to my ever-expanding circle of Dylan acquaintances, until the photocopying got out of hand and postage became prohibitive." The 17 first issues were later (1990-1991) re-published as Isis Dylan News Revisited #1/7, #8/9, #10/11, #12/13, #14/15 and #16/17, in order to make them available to the new subscribers. From issue #18, Isis became a real fanzine, made available to subscribers.

Contributors include the editors, Robert Shelton, Ian Woodward, Al Aronowitz, Jacques Levy, Andrew Muir, Alan Davis, Eric Von Schmidt, Clinton Heylin, and many, many others.

"Established in 1985, Isis Magazine is the longest running paper Bob Dylan magazine still in print. A professionally produced, large format, glossy colour publication, our magazine provides Dylan enthusiasts with a wide-ranging collection of writings on Bob Dylan. We are, in fact, everything you will ever need in a Dylan magazine. Isis is published quarterly, the magazine is sold through [its] website and has subscribers in 32 countries" (bobdylanisis.com).

Large 8vo (approximately 9½" x 7"); pp. [8]; illustrated; original pictorial wrappers; near fine.

"Unofficial programme" for the 1966 UK Tour. Printed by Reed's Ltd in Penrith and published by Valex in Blackpool. Much of the text concerns Dylan's youthful tales of running away from home, his imagined travels, and early musical accomplishments. Being unofficial, this "programme" would almost certainly have been offered for sale outside the various venues during the tour, including the Manchester Free Trade Hall where he was famously labeled Judas just before the final number, Like a Rolling Stone.

29. [Dylan, Bob.] Woodward, Ian, editor. Some notes on Dylan. [Afterwards, The Wicked Messenger], nos. 1-429 [complete]]. N.p. but U.K.: [publisher not identified], 1980-1990.

$750 - Add to Cart

The Wicked Messenger was begun in December 1980 as Some Notes on Dylan (4 issues only), initially circulated privately and printed by photocopy. When The Telegraph started in November 1981, The Wicked Messenger was included as loose-leaf inserts until November 1985 (# 1 to # 238), then as the main part of the Rolling Telegraph Supplement until November 1988 (# 239 to # 429). For a period, there was parallel publication of The Wicked Messenger in Look Back. Since December 1988, The Wicked Messenger has been an integral part of Isis magazine from no. 430 on. The last issue was no. 2271, which is dated in January 2009. The Wicked Messenger ran for just over 28 years, which is slightly more than 80 issues a year on average.

Included here are the first four Some Notes on Dylan (1980-81); The Wicked Messenger, nos. 5-238 (1981-85), all printed by photocopy; and, Rolling Telegraph Supplement, containing nos. 239-429 (1985-1988) of The Wicked Messenger, printed from typescript. Also included here are the remaining issues of Rolling Telegraph Supplements, nos. 16-23 (1988-1990) thereby making this a full and complete run of Rolling Telegraph Supplements.

4to and 8vo (11" x 8½" for The Wicked Messenger and 8¼" x 5¾" for Rolling Telegraph Supplements), 429 pages in all, each number of The Wicked Messenger consisting of a single page. Issues of Rolling Telegraph Supplements have The Wicked Messenger in the first half of the issue, and other material on Dylan in the second half. The sequence of The Wicked Messenger, which extends beyond Rolling Telegraph Supplements into Isis, is confusing and perplexing.

Including Rolling Stone, Q, Mojo, Uncut, Singout, Record Collector, Interview, Crawdaddy, Newsweek, Magpie, New Yorker, Jam, National Lampoon, Saturday Evening Post, People, National Geographic, several newspaper magazines (Sunday NY Times, Herald Sunday, etc.), TV Guide, Reader's Digest, Look, Seventeen, Esquire, etc.

62. McCuiston, Mick, & Jacob McCuiston, et al., editors. Series of dreams. The companion newsletter to "On the Tracks" magazine. Nos. 1-97 [all published]. Grand Junction, Colorado: Rolling Tomes, 1993-2003.

$450 - Add to Cart

99 issues in all (no. 36 is in 3 parts: A, B, and C); 11" x 8½", each issue generally 6-8 pages; occasional illustrations, original printed self-wrappers; three holes punched in the gutter and so bound in a 3-ring binder. Complete and near fine throughout.

This was a newsletter published by Mick and Laurie McCuiston so that On the Tracks subscribers could have Dylan information between the three yearly publications of their fanzine. It offered a "comprehensive news coverage on concert dates, TV appearances, album releases, new books, gossip, etc." The publication of Series of Dreams started in July 1993 and ended in 2003; it was monthly sent untill May 1995 (issue #23). Then, there were only 8-9 mailings a year. (See comewritersandcritics.com).

63. McCuiston, Mick, & Laurie McCuiston, et al., editors. On the tracks. The unauthorized Bob Dylan magazine. Grand Junction, Colorado: Rolling Tomes, Inc., 1993-2003.

$400 - Add to Cart

30 issues in all (includes On the Tracks nos. 1-24 complete, but without the final issue of March 2003; plus 7 annual "Collector's Issues," but without the final undated Collector's Issue - see below); 4to (approx. 11" x 8½"), each issue of On the Tracks generally about 60 pages, Collector's Issues generally about 24 pages; the former illustrated throughout with much in color; the latter mostly unillustrated with text in quadruple column; original printed wrappers; generally fine throughout.

"At first, there were 3 issues a year of On the Tracks, that were sent in February, June and September; then a 4th issue was sent in November, called 'Collector's Issue': it was actually just a catalogue of what was available for sale through Rolling Tomes ... Though there is a gap in the numeration between Vol 10 #2 and Vol 11 #3, this is a complete set, and the 'missing issues' do not seem to exist ... This fanzine looked more like a music magazine. Illustrated by never-before published photographs, it was professionally produced by Mick and Laurie McCuiston from their home in Grand Junction, Colorado. Their address was well known by Dylan collectors in the 90's as they also ran Rolling Tomes, the goldmine where you could easily order any official Dylan stuff: magazines, dylanzines, books -out of print and new-, sheet music, songbooks, tour programmes, posters, but also T-shirts, buttons, cassettes, records and videos ... Long time before Amazon and eBay, selling Dylan stuff was a then a full time job for Mick and Laurie ... Due to Mick's severe health problems they had to stop the publication (see comewritersandcritics.com).

65. Milne, Larry. Hearts of fire. [London]: Hodder and Stoughton, [1987].

$225 - Add to Cart

First and only edition, one of two unrecorded variants without "New English Library" on back; mass market paperback, pp. [4], 124; pictorial paper wrappers with an image from the movie featuring Bob Dylan and Fiona Flanagan on front cover; fine.

According to the Isis fan website, this book was so awful that most copies were immediately pulped after release, although we do see a few copies floating around in unknown condition.

"Hearts of Fire is a 1987 American musical drama film starring Bob Dylan, Fiona Flanagan (billed only as "Fiona") and Rupert Everett. The film was essentially a vehicle for Dylan based on his success as a rock musician. It received poor reviews, a limited theatrical release, and was later written off by Dylan himself" (Wikipedia).

Time Out London said that Dylan "hovers enigmatically on the sidelines, offering jaundiced comments."

Says Muir on his website: "My second editorial stint was on a Dylan quarterly called Judas! This was a far cry from the photocopied, and held together by an occasionally effective slide holder, days of Homer, the Slut. The publisher, Keith Wootton, worked tirelessly to produce a “proper” magazine to the highest printing standards we could attain."

A spoof on Dylan: As noted on back cover, "Previously unpublished movie script to the life of Bob Wordsworth. No stone has been left unrolled, as we discover the real reason why the young Robert Ashley-Zimmerframe III changed his surname to that of his favourite poet (to keep ahead of his creditors); how he came to wear the mantle of 'protest singer' (he sang, people protested); how he tapped into the teenage psyche with his authentic 'My Underwear Sure Needs A-Changin'; how he then turned his back on 'sulk' music and 'went electric', culminating in his legendary tour with The Booed; the real reason behind his almost futile unicycle accident..."
